Patient Representative Group

In our modern society, businesses, private and public realise the importance of customer feedback as an integral part of their continuous improvement programmes. Continuous improvement programmes are designed to ensure the goods or service supplied are the very best possible for the customers they serve. Our medical practice, West Wight Practice (Brookside and Yarmouth) like many other medical practices throughout the UK, have realised the importance of its patients (customers) views and opinions in making the best use of the available health care which it provides within the practice.

Additional to good existing links with Parish Counsellors from Freshwater, Totland and Yarmouth, West Wight Practice have used Patient surveys to gain opinion about the services it provides. Patient surveys will continue to play a part in improving services, but they are expensive and time consuming to organise and limited by the questions they ask. Recent examples of patient surveys undertaken by West Wight Practice include;

  • Seeking patient opinion regarding the new booking system
  • General survey regarding the services provided within the practice.

(Results of these surveys can be found under Patient Surveys)

Without wishing to compromise the excellent relationship with the Parish Councils and provide a more direct interface to gain ideas and opinions, the Practice decided to set up a Patients Participation Group (PPG) with a small number of patients willing to voice their opinion, in a positive way, on matters relating to the services provided. PPG’s are used by many practices throughout the UK. Our PPG is made up of a number of patients, approx. 12 in total, selected from all patient groups within the practice. Each patient group member agrees to abide by a code of practice (Patient Group Charter – see link below) and gives time on a volunteer basis to attend regular meetings throughout the year with representatives of the practice management team. The role of the PPG is “To improve communication between the service providers, the group and the wider population and promote a patient perspective enabling patients to access and make best use of the available health care”.

Our PPG has been running for a little over 12 months. During this time we have held several meetings with the practice management team (see Minutes below), recruited a number of new members and contributed to improvements with the practice. We are now a member of the National Association of Patients Groups (follow the link below). This provides us with an insight into how other practices around the UK delivers their services. It also provides us, the patient, the opportunity to be involved in the debate about the way our health service is run.

As we move forward within 2013 we are in the process of setting our agenda for the coming year and your thoughts would be most welcome. We now have a patient email address iwccg.WestWight-PPG@nhs.net which will allow patients within the practice to contact us directly. We look forward to hearing from you.

Please note that this email address is not for voicing your concerns or complaints. The Practice has its own internal complaints procedure. Please contact the Practice Manager for more information.

Thank you

The patient group members
